Important Update and FAQ for Android, iOS, and Windows Mobile users of BBM for consumers

In June 2016, BlackBerry began working with trusted partner Emtek Group to improve our BBM Consumer platform.  With a goal of providing BBM Consumer users with a rich set of new features, we sought a partner with a compelling ecosystem, investments, and technology resources to take BBM to the next level.  We found such a partner in Emtek Group and we licensed Emtek’s subsidiary Creative Media Works Pte Ltd (Co. Reg. No. 201609444E) the rights to develop and offer cross-platform BBM.

Since then, BlackBerry has been closely coordinating with CMW, gradually transferring certain aspects of the platform to CMW, such as development of the BBM application itself.  To make this a seamless transition, BlackBerry will transfer your BBM Consumer data to CMW for its continued operation of the BBM platform.

Here are answers to questions you may have about the process.

What is BlackBerry’s ongoing involvement in BBM Consumer?

BlackBerry owns 100% of BBM and has licensed the rights to BBM Consumer (i.e., the Android, iOS and Windows Phone versions of BBM) to CMW.  BlackBerry continues to operate the BBOS and BlackBerry 10 versions of BBM, as well as BBM Enterprise (formerly BBM Protected).  If you use these other versions of BBM, keep in mind that they are distinct from BBM Consumer and not affected.

Update: BB10 users asked for it and we listened: If you are currently using BBM Consumer on your BlackBerry 10 device and want to switch to an Android or iPhone, you can now import your existing contacts from BlackBerry 10 onto your new Android or iOS device. To do so, use the Import BB10 Contacts settings feature within BBM for Android or iPhone.  In taking the outlined steps, you will effectively move your BBM Consumer data from BlackBerry Limited (where it now resides) to CMW.

Who are Emtek and CMW?

Emtek is a leading digital media content company with an impressive portfolio of television, web, and content production assets.  CMW is Emtek’s subsidiary that has taken BBM Consumer to the next and higher levels.

Since becoming involved with BBM, CMW has already added great new BBM content and services for you, including in-app transportation services such as Uber, content such as News, Games, Video, Comics, Polls, and e-commerce offerings such as shopping, travel and vouchers.

What will CMW be doing?

As CMW takes over BBM Consumer operations, you can expect additional new BBM content and services, and continued improvement in your access to content and features to continually improve. CMW is committed to securing your information as set forth in these updated BBM Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.  CMW has already included new security features such as Second Factor Authentication (2FA) for registration via e-mail or phone number.

What should I do if I prefer not to have my data transferred to CMW’s BBM platform?

If you prefer not to have your data transferred to CMW for its continued operation of the BBM platform, you may discontinue using BBM Consumer and close your account before February 26, 2018.

For information on how to delete your account, please visit BBM for AndroidBBM for iPhone , or BBM for Windows Phone depending on your platform.

Where do I go for additional information?

You can refer to the how-to and support information on help.bbm.com.
